This two-day backpacking adventure to Lost Lake begins at the Hessie Trailhead near Nederland, following a 2.1 mile route with about 868 feet of elevation gain through aspen groves, pine forest, and wildflower meadows alongside Middle Boulder Creek. The trail leads to the tranquil alpine basin of Lost Lake, nestled at 9,830 feet beneath the rugged Indian Peaks. After setting up camp near the lake’s edge, an afternoon excursion explores the surrounding area, including two scenic overlooks that reveal sweeping views of forested valleys and jagged ridgelines. As dusk settles, the calm waters mirror the soft alpenglow, creating a perfect mountain evening before a peaceful night under the stars.
In winter, Lost Lake offers a beautiful and more solitary backpacking option, with the same route transformed into a snow-covered wonderland ideal for those equipped with snowshoes or winter gear. The frozen lake and quiet forest create a pristine alpine setting, where crisp air, glittering snow, and the silence of winter combine for a truly memorable cold-season wilderness experience.
