Fall River Reservoir and Chinns Lake

The Fall River Reservoir and Chinns Lake area is a rugged alpine destination known for its scenic 4WD roads, historic mining landscapes, and sweeping views above timberline. It's an excellent area for off-road exploration, dispersed camping, off-trail hiking, fishing, photography, and waterfall hunting.

The Fall River Reservoir–Chinns Lake area is surrounded by the James Peak Wilderness, and is a rugged, high-elevation recreation area best known for its network of 4WD roads, dispersed campsites, alpine lakes, and historic mining terrain rather than established hiking trails. It is an excellent destination for off-road exploration, car camping, and fishing, with four lakes tucked below the Continental Divide, including Mt Eva and Parry Peak. While maintained trails are limited, experienced hikers can use social trails and off-trail route finding to explore waterfalls, travel between the lakes, and reach higher alpine basins. The open terrain makes the area well suited for navigation practice, backcountry travel skills, and flexible day hikes for groups comfortable traveling beyond designated trails.

Directions: I-70 westbound, take exit #238 Fall River Road. Drive approx. 6 miles to the 2nd switchback and turn left on the dirt road, Rainbow Road. Continue on this road until you see the sign and split for Fall River Reservoir to the right and Chinns Lake to the left.

Parking can be limited, and the roads all the way to the lakes requires a high clearance 4WD vehicle. There are no designated lots below the lakes, but rather pull-offs along Rainbow Road (CR-174) between private land sections where you can park. There is a lot of private property along Rainbow Road and up to Fall River Reservoir, so pay attention to signage and only park in pull-offs--not in the roadway or along it. There are two decently sized pull-offs just above where the Continental Divide Trail crosses Rainbow Road. Most vehicles can make it there, while above that it gets more technical. From these pull-offs, it's a 1.3 mile walk to the dam on the east side of Fall River Reservoir. If your vehicle can get to the lakes, there is some parking but make sure to obey signage and avoid parking in campsites.  Lake Road (CR-174.1D) splits, so you can either drive up to Fall River Reservoir or to Chinns Lake
