Hanging Lake

Hanging Lake is a National Natural Landmark reached by a short, steep hike up a beautiful natural canyon. The lake is a rare example of a travertine land form, seeming to "hang" at the edge of a cliff, with multiples waterfalls that feed it and drain it.

Located immediately off Glenwood Canyon, the short, steep hike up to the lake (USFS Trail #1850) is very popular and requires an advance reservation.  Visitors are limited to about 615 per day, and car parking also is limited and must be reserved.

The last part of the trail before the lake requires some short but intense scrambling. Right next to the final lake entrance there is a short trail USFS Trail #1850.1) up to Spouting Rock where a large waterfall comes out of the mountainside.

Drinking water and flush toilet facilities are available at the TH.

Reservations and information about Hanging Lake are available at www.visitglenwood.com/hanginglake(970) 384-6309

In 2023 permits are $12/person (May 1 – October 31), $10/person (November 1- April 30).

As of 2023, the USFS is preparing a major upgrade and reconfiguring of the trail which may require periodic closures.
