Knowles Canyon
The hike into Knowles Canyon provides outstanding views of slickrock formations. In season, there are abundant wildflowers all along the route.
The Knowles Canyon Trailhead is accessed by approximately 12 miles of gravel and then dirt road. A high clearance vehicle is needed. Significant rainfall within prior 48 hours may make the road impassable.
The Knowles Canyon Trail (also marked as the Gore Trail) is a good but primitive trail marked with rock cairns and limited signage. The trail descends approximately 1700' in 5 miles from the TH. See here for a good stage-by-stage description and photo guide.
The canyon bottom is brushy and there are no reliable water sources along the trail.
Information about the area, access, and seasonal closures is available at BLM' Grand Junction Field Office, 970-244-3000.
