Mount Lamborn and it's neighbors, Landsend Peak and Coal Mountain, dominate the North Fork valley, towering over the town of Paonia. At around 11,000 feet, they provide stunning views across the North Fork Valley, the north side of the Black Canyon, and on to the San Juans, as well as a good look at the interior of the West Elk Wilderness.
Each of these peaks can be approached from multiple trailheads. From the west, approach via the Bell Creek Road and the Lamborn Trail , south of Paonia. From the south, approach via the Cottonwood Creek and Little Coal Creek Roads and the Little Coal Creek Trail, east of Crawford. From the north, approach via the Lone Cabin Road and the Inter-ocean Pass Trail, behind Paonia.
All of these approaches benefit from a vehicle with at least moderately high clearance, and 4wd will cut a few miles off any of these hikes.
Mount Lamborn is most commonly climbed via a combination of the Lamborn Trail and the Mount Lamborn Trail. In 2025, the CMC conservation team did significant work on the Lamborn Trail.
Both Landsend Peak and Coal Mountain involve significant off-trail hiking, with route-finding in the woods.
