Mount Saint Helens
Iconic Washington State volcano 52 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon and 98 miles south of Seattle.
Climbing Mt. St. Helens (8,365') is a strenuous (in summer, non-technical) 9–12 mile round-trip hike (4,500–5,500 ft gain) taking 7–12 hours. Popular from late spring to fall, it requires ascending steep boulder fields and ash slopes to the rim. A paid permit is required, and climbers must be prepared for wind, exposure, and potential hazards. This becomes a technical climb in winter and spring, requiring crampons and ice axe.
For planning visits, current trail conditions, or reserving climbing permits, use the USDA Forest Service: Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument portal. SummitPost list three summit routes but AllTrails lists 92 possible trail combinations. Washington State Parks operates the Visitor Center. The Mt St Helens Institute provides an excellent summary for area and mountain visits.
