North Pole Basin
Moderate hike of up to 6.7 miles and 2100' elevation gain near Carbondale.
North Pole Basin is a pristine, seldom-visited basin in an annex of the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab, frequented by mountain goats. Possible grassy walk-up a 12,500' unnamed summit.
AllTrails shows a partial track into the basin between Crystal Peak (12,588') and Galena Mountain (12,569'). Treasury Mountain (13,533') is at the head of the basin.
Take Gothic Rd (#317) out of Crested Butte (closed Sept - July), which turns into Schofield Pass Rd (#317) over Schofield Pass where the road's name changes again, to Crystal River Rd (#314.1) and follow a 4WD road to a gate and limited parking for the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab.
