Red Mountain (Poudre Canyon)

A steep short off-trail hike to a Class 3/4 scramble of infrequently visited Red Mountain summit; approximately 4 miles round trip, 1500 feet elevation gain, Moderate B. Many route variations are possible, and there are several other scrambling opportunities along the way. The route begins with a crossing of the Cache La Poudre river, best done in the fall or early winter when water levels are lower.

The starting point is the parking lot at the intersection of Poudre Canyon Road (State Hwy 14) and Stove Prairie Road, approximately 25 miles northwest of Fort Collins.  Cross the Cache La Poudre River (no bridge); even at low flow, expect knee-deep wading across the rocky stream.  From this point, there are no developed trails, navigate northward toward the summit of Red Mountain.  The best approach hiking is generally along one of several ridges, watch for the occasional abandoned mine shaft.  The summit may be approached from the east or west (Class 3/4) or north (Class 4/5), with short sections of mild to moderate exposure.  Conditions and group interest permitting, there are also several other lower unnamed summits that can be scrambled.  The trip leaders will bring a rope to setup a belay or fixed line at the crux points if desired.

Required gear: helmet; collapsible poles and water shoes or sandals for stream crossing; a climbing harness with locking caribiner and means of prussiking for any participants who wish to take a belay or use the fixed line.

Note: This trip may also be done from the Crystal Wall climbing area ~2 miles down river; or as a point-to-point between Stove Prairie Road and the Crystal Wall.
