San Rafael Swell Recreation Area

This huge south-central Utah area offers beautiful valleys, large and slot canyons, trails, slickrock, canyons, gorges, mesas, buttes, and badlands. There is much evidence of Native American presence, including cliff settlements and rock art.

The area consists of a giant dome-shaped anticline of sandstone, shale, and limestone that was pushed up 40–60 million years ago. The area is so arid and remote, it has been used to train for living on Mars.
The BLM site provides a good introduction to the area, including maps and reservation information. The address is AllTrails alone offers 31 "best trails."
Some areas of the San Rafael Swell are designated as wilderness or protected areas, such as the San Rafael Reef Wilderness and the Little Wild Horse Canyon.
