Shawnee Peak

At 11,927,' part of the Kenosha Mountains in the Lost Creek Wilderness, west of Bailey. There are no trails to the summit, it is mostly a bushwhack.

Bill Tyler Gulch is the best place to park and set off for the Shawnee Peak summit.  The Gulch is next to US-285, southwest past Bailey.  Park next to US-285 (south side) about 1.5 miles past the town of Shawnee. There is no sign but there is a gate into the National Forest, providing access between private properties.  Do not block the gate when parking.  Find excellent route details at Summit Post.    8 miles, 3800’ gain.

Option: For a longer trip, consider Ben Tyler Trail #606 One mile further along US-285 next to the road (also on the south side) there is a small TH sign facing the road and space for about eight cars. When the parking area is full, park on the opposite side of the road.  This route also requires bushwhacking once leaving the trail.  9+ miles, 3800’ gain

Another option: descend from the summit to the Craig Park Trail #608 to return to the Ben Tyler TH.  11+ miles, 3800’ gain.

For climbing, the East Ridge offers Class III to V climbs.
