Skaguay Power Plant
This out-n-back hike (~9 miles, ~1600 ft elevation gain) follows a rugged route into the remote upper reaches of the Arkansas River valley to the abandoned Skaguay Power Plant, a remarkably intact relic of Colorado's early hydroelectric era. Along the way, participants will navigate sections of faint trail, route-finding challenges, and stream crossings while exploring the historic powerhouse that once supplied electricity to the mining communities of the region.
This out-n-back hike covers approximately 9 miles round trip with about 1,600 feet of elevation gain as it follows a rugged route through the upper Arkansas River valley to the abandoned Skaguay Power Plant. The journey includes multiple stream crossings, several of which may require careful foot placement or wading depending on seasonal water levels, along with sections of faint or deteriorated trail that demand attentive route finding. Upon reaching the site, participants will have the opportunity to explore one of Colorado's most impressive industrial ruins, where remnants of the powerhouse, water conveyance system, and supporting infrastructure remain scattered throughout the canyon. Constructed in 1909 by the Central Colorado Power Company, the Skaguay Power Plant harnessed water diverted from high mountain streams to generate electricity for mines, railroads, and communities across central Colorado, operating for decades before being abandoned in the late twentieth century. The combination of adventurous travel, frequent creek crossings, fascinating industrial history, and dramatic mountain scenery makes this an outstanding exploratory hike for those interested in Colorado's mining and engineering heritage.
