Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge

Once the nation’s smallest wildlife refuge, with free parking and entrance, Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge is located in the heart of Arvada. Just 12 miles northwest of downtown Denver, and 18 miles southeast of Boulder, this urban refuge spans 72 acres that are home to more than 120 species of songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, coyotes, red fox, beaver, turtles, deer, and more. Come hike the landscape, listen to birdcalls, and see creatures native to this habitat. Discover the variety even a hidden gem within an urban outdoor recreational area offers.

East Side (Ponds) Loop Trail

Open Memorial Day (May) through Labor Day (September), this trail meanders past the refuge’s eponymous ponds and through mixed prairie grass meadows. After moving through the refuge's Environmental Education Area (just off the main meadow facing Friends Pond), you’ll slope a bit higher for views of several natural areas, including the Rocky Mountain Front Range. The lower portion of the trail is wheel-chair accessible with crushed fines used on the switchback to navigate the steeper slopes, while much of the rest of the trail is dirt track. Several benches are scattered along the trail to rest and enjoy wildlife viewing.

West Side (Prairie) Loop Trail

Open year-round, this trail is located on the west side of the Refuge known as the Prairie Management Area. It’s supported on the community side by the Founders & Friends (Two Ponds Preservation Foundation) volunteer group, which partners with USFWS for outreach, educational programming, habitat restoration, and stewardship efforts

Access the  trailheads at either 77th and Kipling or on the Southside of the medical parking lot off 80th and Kipling. This well-maintained, flat, accessible crusher fines trail loop can be navigated and traversed easily. Along the way watch for deer, raptors, songbirds and even coyote depending upon the time of day.
