Vance's Cabin

A moderate winter snowshoe ~6.2 miles RT, and 776' elevation gain. Vance's Cabin is a popular overnight winter hut destination just north of Leadville and Tennessee Pass. The trailhead is at 10,424' and hut is at ~11,160'.

A popular winter hut destination, Vance's Cabin is located on a timbered mountainside near Tennessee Pass. Construction of the cabin began in 1981 and was completed in 1988. The hut is named in honor of one of the original owner's father Vance Faulkenberg, who was involved in building the cabin using timber from the site.

Layout and capacity: 4 beds upstairs in a loft and 10 bunk beds downstairs in a communal sleeping area. Capacity 14.

Hut Location: Vance's Cabin is located in central Colorado at 10,980', about 10 miles north of the town of Leadville, and about 4 miles north of Ski Cooper ski area.

The main winter route into Vance's Cabin follows a marked ski trail that begins at the base of Ski Cooper. It follows rolling terrain and gentle climbs into the hut.  Compared to other huts, it is a bit more primitive but a nice destination with great views.

Reservations for Vance's Cabin are required and can be made through the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association's annual reservation lottery.
