Trip Report

Hiking – Bird hike at Oxbow park and preserve

On a sunny day, with light breeze, we found 35 bird species. We were three CMC members, and three guests: Mike Mays, Abi Romero & Courtney Turkan. We met the latter two by chance in the parking lot. They are among a group doing research in the area on how light pollution effects birds and small animals around oil and gas facilities.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Dirt trail was dry and flat except for about 20 feet. When I first hiked here, during winter, the trail was icy and snowpacked. In dry conditions the trail is easy to follow. Trail is a 1.9 mile loop through shrub and riparian habitats, paralleling the Animas River part of the way.
