Trip Report

Intermediate Snowshoe – Butler Gulch

It’s hard to beat hot apple cider and biscuits after a cold and windy snowshoe hike to the Jean mine along Butler Gulch trail. Louise set a pretty tough to match Trip Leader standard both during the hike and post-hike refreshments. Overall this was a great hike with a wonderful group of folks.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • New snow made for great snowshoe conditions for the entire hike. Butler Gulch trail made for a memorable hike. I’m looking forward to trying out this trail during the summer.

The drive was easy from Wooly Mammoth PnR to the TH. Plenty of parking at the TH, with about 3-4 inches of new snow on the ground.

The new snow made for excellent  snowshoe conditions the entire hike. It got even more interesting above tree line where the wind picked up, the snow got deeper, and the trail vanished.  The group made it to the Jean mine site where we enjoyed a quick snack.

Louise was a spectacular leader setting the pace, watching out for the group, and helping all accomplish our goal for the hike (especially in the face of some challenging conditions) - Thank You!

Our group was great, a mix of new and long-term CMC members, trading stories and having some fun on a Monday in February. Louise treated us to hot cider and biscuits at the end, which really hit the spot after a ~5.5 mile, ~1500 ft elevation gain hike.

Overall, a memorable hike with a wonderful group.
