RMOTHG Trip –James Peak via Loch Lomond
At 5 miles / 2000 ft of elevation gain this is probably the shortest and easiest route up James Peak. A fantastic "tundra stroll" for those who are in shape for it. Highlights include seeing 5 pristine alpine lakes, having the ruggled backdrop of the NE face of Bancroft, seeing moose near Loch Lomond, including 2 bulls, both before and after our hike.

The road that accesses Loch Lomond (Stuart Rd) requires high clearance vehicles with at least 8 inches of ground clearance. Most SUV's have this clearance: Subaru Outback (8.7 - 9.5 inches), Forester (8.7 - 9.2), Toyota Rav 4 (8.4 - 8.6).
The upper gate on Stuart Rd (about 2 miles up) is only open between July 15 - October 14. Add 2-4 miles if hiking/snowshoeing/skiing before or after these dates.
Directions to Loch Lomond TH: From I-70 westbound take Exit #238 for Fall River Road/St. Mary's. Drive approximately 8 miles to Alice Rd and turn left. Turn right on Stewart road (NFSR 701) to Loch Lomond, approximately 2.3 miles from Alice Rd turnoff.
One of those "perfect" hikes - a very compatible group with similar pace, spectacular scenic views (especially of the very rugged NE of Bancroft), gazing down on 5 glimmering alpine lakes, an enjoyable "tundra stroll" to the summit, and having moose visit us near Loch Lomond both before and after our hike.
