TCS Advanced Snow - CMC Denver - 2024

Climbing Course

TCS Advanced Snow

Advanced Snow instruction is geared towards alpine climbing and more aggressive pursuits, and teaches the advanced skills needed to participate safely on non-glaciated mountaineering climbs within Colorado - in all seasons and weather conditions. This includes training in preparation for graduation climbs involving direct ascent of steep snow couloirs, fourth class rock scrambling, short sections of belayed low fifth class rock climbing, and use of rope for protection and rappelling.

This is not an introductory class, and we’ve used the terminology “advanced” because the course builds on skills acquired in other CMC classes. A basic prerequisite for Alpine Climbing School is that you have taken CMC Wilderness Trekking School, or have equivalent experience. There are two additional prerequisite courses for Advanced Snow: Basic Climbing, which addresses basic belaying and climbing techniques, and Intermediate Snow, which addresses snow travel using an ice axe and crampons in an alpine environment. These classes are intended to be taken together, and Advanced Snow is intended to be taken sequentially. Intermediate Snow instruction for self-arrest requires that the student first successfully demonstrate self-arrest skills without crampons. After successfully demonstrating these skills, the progression is to self-arrest with crampons, either in Intermediate Snow or Advanced Snow.

Advanced Snow (previously titled Technical Snow), introduces the use of rope and anchor systems for protection while climbing or descending snow or mixed sections of rock, snow and ice.

Course Objectives:

Skills covered in Advanced Snow include:

  • Self-Arrest With Crampons (Intermediate Snow Review)
  • Roped Climbing and Descending

Required Equipment

For Intermediate Snow you needed the following gear:

  • Helmet
  • Harness
  • Ice Axe with leash and locking carabiner
  • Crampons
  • Mountaineering boots
  • Winter Ten Essentials
  • Snow Shoes (if needed - TBD)

For Advanced Snow add this:

  • 2 Large Locking Carabiners, HMS type (not auto locking)
  • Plaquette Style Belay Device (recommend BD ATC Guide or Petzl Reverso)
  • Double length nylon runner 18mm x 120cm (3.9’)
  • Prusik cord with medium locker (we have prusik cords to give out at the lecture)
  • Daypack sufficient to carry personal gear plus tech gear (rope, pickets and shovel - provided by CMC)

Refer to the ACS Recommended Gear List for more information on gear. For larger HMS carabiners we recommend CAMP Core Lock, Petzl Williams, or Black Diamond RockLock or VaporLock.  For medium HMS carabiners Petzl Attache.

CMC does have all of the listed gear to loan with exception of mountaineering boots. Please see the CMC Club Gear Checkout module to request gear.

It is possible to rent most of this gear in addition to mountaineering boots from REI, Bent Gate, and Wilderness Exchange - but plan ahead if you intend to rent as their supplies are limited.
