ARC Pro Intermediate Self Rescue Field Day 1 – Castlewood Canyon State Park

We will review the skills from the Basic Self Rescue class, then move into learning new skills such as a climber pick-off, escaping a belay, and lowering and assisting a climber from above.

We will review the skills from the ARC Pro Basic Self Rescue class- getting hands-free, taking over a belay, and rope ascending; then move into new skills. Students will learn how to ascend to a climber and bring them down using a counterbalance rappel, escape a belay and get into "baseline", lower a climber from the top of a climb, and assist a climber from the top of a climb using hauling methods.

We will meet at 8 am at the trailhead for the Grocery Store Wall in Castlewood Canyon. Enter the Park through the West entrance on Castlewood Canyon Road. Park at the small lot on the right with the single picnic table, just prior to the large lot on the left. Here's the spot on the map-

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

  • Basic climbing kit- harness, helmet, shoes- including approach/hiking and climbing
  • Belay device- whichever type(s) you own and use to include an autoblocking device such as the BD Guide or Petzl Reverso.
  • Personal tether- 120 cm sewn nylon sling or PAS or equivalent
  • One 120 cm thin dyneema sling (to release your guide belay device)
  • One additional double length (120 cm) sewn nylon sling/runner
  • At least 2 quickdraws or alpine draws
  • Non-locking carabiners- at least 4
  • Locking carabiners- at least 6 total with at least 4 large HMS/Pear-shaped
  • Two rappel back-up/rescue loops- 10-15 inch tied loops of 5-6 mm nylon cord (made from a 4-ft. length of cord), or small Hollow-block loop; bring 2 separate loops
  • Cordelette- 14-22 ft. of 7 mm nylon cord (untied length)
  • *Optional*- Foot and waist prusik loops if owned (from BMS Rock)
