So, now you have learned, from other classes, how to get out and play in the winter backcountry. But what do you do if things don't go as planned? A day trip can turn into an unexpected overnight - or longer.
Classroom Session: The course classroom session will be held in Colorado Springs. We will discuss and demonstrate the gear requirements and concepts of survival in the winter wilderness of Colorado.
Field Session: To complete the course, a field session will be scheduled to provide an opportunity to spend two days (one overnight) in the wilderness to put those concepts to practice.
Attendance at all sessions is required to earn the badge. We will build multiple types of winter shelters and review other winter survival tips and tricks. We will backpack in on snowshoes for a short distance with full gear, but the intent is to spend the night in snow shelters using just what you carry on a winter day trip, or a bit more if you are concerned. We will have our extra gear as a backup. The classroom session will be in Colorado Springs, from 6:00p to 9:30p. The field session will be conducted as a separate trip with the date, time and location details provided to registered students during the classroom session and/or via coordination email. A general fitness level to travel on snowshoes, and dig snow shelters for long periods is required. The target audience is anyone who goes on day trips in the winter in any snow environment.
