Summary of Scrambling classification levels (Yosemite Decimal System – “YDS”)
- Class 1: Hiking on well-established trails.
- Class 2: More challenging hiking, possibly off-trail, where hands may be used occasionally for balance. This can include easy snow climbs or traversing talus and scree.
- Class 3: Scrambling or un-roped climbing requiring frequent use of hands to navigate steep or rugged terrain, such as large rocks or steep snow.
- Class 4: Climbing that necessitates handholds and footholds for progression. Due to the steep and hazardous nature of the terrain, rope is sometimes employed, as falls can be fatal.
- Class 5: Technical climbing involving the use of ropes and belaying. This category encompasses traditional rock climbing.
