PPG BMS - Basic Rock Scrambling - May 2023

Scrambling Course

Rock Scrambling

This course is the first course in the Pikes Peak Group's Basic Mountaineering School (BMS) curriculum. Basic Rock Scrambling consists of a set of skills that fill a gap between on or off-trail hiking and technical climbing. Skills include assessing hazards and decision making, scrambling techniques, assessing and choosing off-trail routes in scrambling terrain.

The PPG WTS - Wilderness Fundamentals Course is the prerequisite for this course.  Students must have earned the "Wilderness Trekking School Student" badge to be able to register for this course.

The prerequisite course covers concepts that will be expected knowledge for this course and will reference the textbook (Freedom of the Hills, 9th ed.) provided from the PPG WTS - Wilderness Fundamentals Course.

The class consists three blocks.  Block one is a self-study portion performed by reading through the Student Handbook and reviewing the additional materials referenced by the links in the handbook.  Blocks two and three consist of two field days on alpine scrambling terrain with outdoor discussion, demonstrations and practice with instructor feedback/supervision. Registrants are required to complete the PPG WTS - Wilderness Fundamentals Course.
