ARC Pro Basic Anchors

Students will learn climbing anchor fundamentals that can be applied to rock, snow and ice anchors, but focusing on setting up anchors for top rope rock climbing.

We will spend a full field day outside reviewing anchor gear, general anchoring principles, and methods of rigging climbing anchors.  At the end of the class students should be able to safely rig a top rope climbing anchor using various materials.

Prerequisites:  BMS Rock or equivalent, to include basic belaying and rappelling skills.

Note: This class does not cover trad gear placement, which is covered in our ARC Pro Trad Gear and Anchors class.

Required Equipment
  • Basic climbing kit- harness, helmet, shoes (approach are OK)
  • Belay/rappel device- preferably an autoblocking type such as BD Guide or Petzl Reverso, or an assisted-braking device like the GriGri.
  • Personal Anchor System (PAS) or 120 cm sewn nylon sling for tether/rappel extension
  • Rappel back-up sling- made from 5 or 6 mm diameter nylon cord tied into an 11-13 inch loop or a 13.5 inch HollowBlock sling
  • Gear for anchor construction-
    • Cordelette- 14-30 ft. of 7 mm diameter nylon cord (untied length)
    • #2 120 cm sewn runners (nylon or Dyneema)
    • Locking carabiners- at least 4
    • Non-locking carabiners- at least 4
    • **Optional**- Longer webbing/cordage for rigging top-rope anchor- if you have long lengths of webbing, a static line, or an old climbing rope you can bring them.  We will have some static ropes available for you to use for this purpose also
