Colorado’s wild mountain backcountry is the source of joy, enlightenment and self-actualization. But that same wilderness has, yearly, led Colorado to record the highest number of Search and Rescue missions of all 50 states (CPW 2022). While rescues have been necessary for skiers, hunters, snowmobilers, mountain bikers, kayakers and canoeists, the overwhelming outdoor enthusiasts requiring rescue are hikers, backpackers and mountain climbers, engaging in CMC types of activities.
I love the mountains, but I have also been intimidated by them. I worry about what could happen. After this class, I will be much more confident on my hikes.
This has led to a recently emerging initiative known as Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR). PSAR seeks to educate backcountry users in key safety skills that can minimize backcountry emergencies. The Colorado Mountain Club supports this movement by providing Hiking Safety Seminars for members and guests. The curriculum is based on deep and very up to date research and experience on what is most likely to go wrong during backcountry travel. Topics include avoiding getting lost, what to do if you do become lost, the most essential gear to carry, mountain weather, lightning, escaping forest fires, etc. Very current information is shared on how to survive wolf, black bear, mountain lion, moose and rattlesnake encounters. Guidance is also provided on when and how to interact with emergency services.
The instructors really know their stuff, but the make you feel welcome and are happy to share. I got answers to questions I’ve had for a long time.
Seminars are taught by highly experienced Master Wilderness Safety instructors with decades of risk management, trip leading and adult education experience. The class time requires one evening, taking 2 ½ hours, at the CMC Basecamp. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Members earn the CMC Hiking Safety Badge. The last classes of 2025 will be held August 27 or September 24. You can register through the monthly calendar by clicking on the date you want to attend.
I am a new CMC member and felt that safety was the right place to start. The course was worthwhile and I will try some of the other safety classes which were discussed.
Hear what more students have to say:
This year, I celebrated 50 years as a CMC member. I was surprised to learn many new safety tips which I did not know. I wish I had had this class 50 years ago.
"Having recently moved here from Illinois, I am aware Colorado is very different. I know I have things I need to learn. This class was a good start for me.
"I need to get out more and take advantage of having moved to Colorado. This class gave me solid information to get going safely.
"Great class! So glad I found it.
