Joanne Young has been a member since 2012 and continues to contribute to the Club in so many ways. Her help as a front office volunteer has been invaluable to our Membership Team. Membership Manager, Kelsie Turner, says, "Joanne is ready to jump in wherever help is needed. Her reliability, friendly nature, and deep knowledge of all things CMC make her an invaluable part of our volunteer team!"

We asked Joaane, what motivates you to stay so involved in CMC?

I joined CMC in 2012, primarily for the courses offered and the opportunity to learn how to make good decisions in the backcountry. Today, I teach BNSS, leading Backcountry Nordic ski trips, assist with BIM instruction and lead Adventure Travel trips.

When CMC put out a request for volunteers to help in the office, I decided to give it a try. I’ve really enjoyed learning about CMC from the office perspective and gaining a deeper appreciation for all that goes on behind the scenes.

Beyond her volunteering with staff, she was one of the primary trip leaders for the recent Adventure Travel trip to Ecuador! We asked Jonnane to give us more details on what she gained from the experience:

  • What were the top three highlights of the Adventure Travel Trip you just went on?

I had the pleasure of leading 13 CMC Adventure Travelers to Ecuador, where we visited the city of Quito, Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, with six of us continuing on to the Amazon Rainforest. These 13 participants made the journey incredibly fun and memorable. It’s hard to choose just three highlights, but I’ll try. The trip was amazing, check out some photos on the Adventure Travel Facebook page

  • Wildlife in the Galápagos
There is truly nothing like it — iguanas, manta rays, stingrays, seals, sea lions, giant land tortoises, sea turtles, and of course the incredible variety of bird species.
  • Amazon Rainforest
We traveled two hours down the Napo River by motorized boat, then transferred to a canoe for another two hours to reach our lodge — simply amazing! We saw five different species of monkeys, countless birds, caimans, and even a boa constrictor hanging in a tree. We woke each morning to the sounds of howler monkeys known for their deep, guttural roars that travel long distances through the rainforest as territorial warnings.
  • Quito, the capital of Ecuador
We stayed in the historic center, surrounded by beautiful colonial architecture, rich history, and vibrant local culture. Ecuador is know for it's chocolate so of course we went for a chocolate tasting, simply delicious!
  • What is your next Adventure Travel dream?
    • Yellowstone in Winter Feb 4-10, 2027 co-leading with Renee Howbert (not yet posted but very soon)
    • Dream future CMC Adventure Travel trip, there are so many where do I begin?  Bhutan
    • I would ask CMC members what is their dream Adventure Travel trip, maybe their suggestions will be our next one
On behalf of CMC staff and members, thank you for all you do Joanne!
