Roder Leadership Scholarship Application

The Eckart Roder Education Fund was established in 2003 in honor of Eckart Roder, a long-time member of the Colorado Mountain Club. Eckart exemplified the values of mountain safety, responsibility and courtesy. In 2023, the Roder Fund was combined with the CMC Leadership Scholarship to be known as the Eckart Roder Leadership Scholarship. The Roder Leadership Scholarship continues to honor Eckart's legacy by providing financial support to qualifying CMC volunteers who share his passion for hands-on education and service. Donations to the fund are tax-deductible and accepted any time of year.

Our volunteers share their time, expertise, and passion with our members. The Roder Leadership Scholarship supports their efforts by providing scholarships for trainings that further their education and skill development.

The Roder Leadership Scholarship is available to CMC members who are volunteer trip leaders, school directors, school instructors, or those in training. You must also be able to fulfil the requirements of your scholarship by leading 6 trips/course days over the following 2 years.

PLEASE READ: Application Process

To apply for a Leadership Scholarship, please submit an online application. CMC Staff review applications on a rolling basis. Expect between 7–14 business days to receive an email with instructions on how to apply a promo code toward an upcoming course.

Scholarships are awarded based on the availability of funds and equitable distribution across CMC groups*. Please do not pay for a course anticipating a reimbursement. Approved applicants will be notified by email with more information.

Course transfers: If a scholarship recipient is unable to attend their originally scheduled course, they may request one transfer to another course at no cost. After that, the Leader will need to pay for the course on their own.

Avalanche Education Scholarships

  • Avalanche Terrain Avoidance: Offered free to all CMC volunteers. Find more information and the enrollment promo code on your Volunteer Benefits Page.
  • AIARE L1 and Companion Rescue: Scholarships are awarded based on available funds and equitable distribution across CMC groups. For 2026–27, applications are due by November 6 and will be awarded by November 13 for leaders to begin signing up. Please do not pay for a course anticipating a reimbursement.

Continuing Education Scholarships

Currently, CMC State is only able to provide scholarships for Wilderness First Aid and Basic Avalanche Education. Please reach out to your Group council for information about Group-level scholarships.
