Ascending Hikes – Staunton State Park - Lion's Head Overlook
This hike will visit two of the best parts of Staunton State Park: Elk Falls and Lions Head Overlook. For those of you who are tired of high peaks, this is a longer hike at lower elevation with moderate elevation gain.

This hike visits some great areas of Staunton State Park: Elk Falls and Lions Head Overlook. Because of the distance (10.2 miles), you'll have a chance to work on some long-distance stamina.
We will start out on Scout Line (SL) to Marmot Passage (MP) to Chimney Rock (CR) to Elk Falls. From Elk Falls, we'll continue on Chimney Rock (CR) to Lion's Head (LH), where we'll get to the Elk Falls overlook and Lion's Head overlook. On the return, we will follow Lion's Back (LB) to Marmot Passage (MP) to Scout Line (SL).
This will be an all-day activity, so please do not plan special activities for the afternoon or early evening after the hike.
Our pace will be 1.5 mph to accommodate individuals who are working on developing hiking skills and stamina. If you are faster, realize that you will have to wait for the group.
Finally, this hike is at the end of October, and the weather can be a little unpredictable. Depending on the forecast, you may need microspikes, waterproof boots, and warm layers.
Meet at the pull-off at The Fort Restaurant at 7:00 am for a prompt 7:15 am departure. The Fort is located at 19192 CO-8, Morrison, CO 80465. Park on the dirt area just south of the entrance to The Fort parking lot.
Drivers should have a State Parks Pass.
We will take US 285 South to Elk Creek Rd and turn right. Follow Elk Creek Rd to the entrance of Staunton State Park. Park in Lot Lazy V.
Required Equipment
10 essentials, and potentially microspikes, waterproof boots, and warm layers.
