Backpack – BPX 3-Day: Rawah Crater Lakes and McIntyre Lake loop from West Branch TH

We will follow the BPX suggested itinerary in the route and place.

This is a difficult loop with lots of vertical feet. Please make sure you can complete the loop miles and elevation.

Route Day 1 - Starting from West Branch TH and FS RD 103 take West Brach trail to Rawah trail to Twin Crater Lakes turn-off. If weather permits, camp at the lakes, otherwise camp at lower elevation near timberline and several smaller creeks.. 6.4 miles and 2,650 vertical feet. 

Route Day 2- Backtrack to Rawah trail and at junction go north to McIntyre Lake turn-off. 5.8 miles and 1,000 vertical feet. 

Route Day 3 - Backtrack to Rawah trail and continue on it going north to pass Sandbar lakes and then stay right on Camp Lake trail back to West Branch trail and starting trailhead. 10.3 miles and 700 vertical feet and 2,300 feet descent.

Meet the leader at the West Branch trailhead at 10am. I will be coming from Walden. I will distribute contact for those carpooling from the Denver area once the roster is finalized.

Required Equipment

Proper equipment to protect your food from bears is required. Bear cannisters are not required, but recommended, since it is difficult to find good trees for an effectively hanging a bear bag.
