Hiking – American Lakes

Trip

Hiking – American Lakes

We will bike on the Michigan Ditch Trail from CO 14 at Cameron Pass for 2.5 mi, where the American Lakes Trail crosses the ditch trail from below. The scenery is stunning! We will hike from the Michigan Ditch trail for 2.5 mi to the high alpine American Lakes (an alternate name is Michigan Lakes) and with a total elevation gain of 960 ft. We will enjoy a lunch break here. Time and weather permitting, we may hike on to Thunder Pass, an additional 0.8 mi and 100 ft elevation gain. Our pace will be casual allowing time for photographs. We will return via the same route, enjoying the gorgeous views throughout our adventure.

Biking on the Michigan Ditch Trail is straight forward, care must be taken with loose gravel and bikes should have "wider" tires. The Michigan Ditch Trail is an access road for maintaining the ditch.
