This is a ‘Leader in Training’ trip for: Adam Lawson. This is a beautiful hike! We will hit lots of elevation gain up front and then enjoy being up high with a great view! The two times I've been in this area I was able to look down on all the clouds covering Boulder. I like to keep an eye on my heart rate to stay in a true ‘cardio zone’ so we won’t be jogging:) Plan on 6 - 7 hours car to car and we’ll have plenty of breaks (although if super cold they might be quick but frequent as needed). Before signing up please keep in mind even though this is right ‘by Boulder’ it’s in January and could be very cold and windy. I’ll email more as we approach the date but at a minimum:
- Mountaineering boots, waterproof shoes, or cold weather hiking boots.
- Microspikes
- 10 Essentials (headlamp also)
- Several pairs of gloves
- Extra socks
- Plenty of food/water (best way to stay warm!)
- Warm puffy
- Consider hard shells if the wind is looking rough
- Because it’s closer to 10 miles I would recommend this NOT be your first winter hike but it’s certainly a solid 2nd or 3rd if you already know you can stay warm.
- I will leave the lot at 7
- As a group, and especially in the winter, please remember that keeping everyone safe is the goal - NOT hitting both peaks. Practically that means if someone’s not doing well or struggling to stay warm we might not get to the top.
Start Time 7am. Meet at NCAR parking lot in those first 2 rows you come to (39.97939, -105.27465) outside of Boulder. I was there a few weeks ago and no port-a-potties like in times past so do that before arriving!
Required Equipment
Usual winter hiking gear. Traction device for some spots in the canyon.
