This hike has splendid views and provides the opportunity to learn about (1) the origin of the molybdenum deposits at Red Mountain, (2) history of the last major glaciation in Colorado, and (3) significance of the small glacial moraines near the head of Butler Gulch.
Please advise the leader of any medical conditions you have that could affect you on this hike prior to the day of the hike. This is a easy B hike. We want to try to maintain a slow moderate pace. There is a lot for good scenery and geology to see on this hike. This gulch is one of the leader's favorites for hiking and snowshoeing. We can always stop to look at geology and ask questions. Trailhead is at 10,440 feet. Weather permitting, the hike will include an on-trail ascent of a ridge 12,200 feet high. Bring your 10 essentials and lunch. Dress for the weather and be prepared for adverse weather above timberline. Trekking poles and gloves are very highly recommended, because the trail is steep in places and there is loose rock on the trail. For those who carpool bring face masks and be prepared to drive yourself. The cost is 80 miles X .30 = $24 split by everyone in the car including the driver.
This hike is limited to fully vaccinated RMOTHG members only. No Guests and No Dogs.
Meet at Woolly Mammoth Park and Ride section MM for a prompt 6:45 AM departure. For those who carpool bring face masks and be prepared to drive yourself.
The day before the trip I will send email with weather and driving directions.
