Hiking – Cheyenne Mountain SP - Talon, North Talon, Dixon to Devil’s Backbone
Hike from Talon to North Talon to Dixon Trail and then Devil’s Backbone on Cheyenne Mountain in Cheyenne Mountain State Park. On Devil’s Back Bone trail stop at Robber’s Roost which is a prominent rocky outcropping. Return via a short segment of Mountain Loop trail back to Dixon Trail and then hike back down to the parking lot. 15.6 miles, 3195 gain, difficult hike, moderate pace.

Start at Limekiln Trailhead parking lot. Follow the Talon Trail through Cheyenne Mountain State Park’s lower meadows up through rolling hills with scrub oak then up into a pine forest to meet North Talon. Stay on North Talon continuing a steady ascent till you meet Dixon Trail. At 2.5 miles on Dixon Trail there will be an area to for bikes and horses. From that point on only hikers are allowed on Dixon Trail which becomes more narrow, rocky and steep. Remnants of an airplane crash can be seen as you ascend Dixon. Follow Dixon to the Devils’ Backbone trail which is a rocky area that requires easy Class 2 scrambling. At the top of Devils Backbone look for a kiosk by a prominent rock outcropping referred to as Robber’s Roost. Return following a short segment of the Mountain Loop that meets Dixon Trail which will lead down to the parking lot.
Meet at the Limekiln Trailhead at Cheyenne Mountain State Park at 6:00 am. A valid annual Colorado State Park Pass or a fee of $10 is required to enter the park.
Required Equipment
Bring snacks, lunch and 2-3 liters of water in addition to the other 10 essentials. Wear sunscreen, a hat & gloves and layers including a coat that protects from wind/rain/snow. We will plan on eating lunch at the Robber's Roost rock outcropping on Devil's Backbone Trail on Cheyenne Mountain.
