Hiking – Mount Flora

Hiking – Mount Flora

Mount Flora lives up to it's name ... when I scouted last week, I saw lots of sky pilot, purple fringe, Indian Paintbrush and alpine spring beauty to name a few. We will have views of Grays, Torreys, Parnassus, Vasquez, Twin Cones, Indian Peak and Longs Peak. All the high mountains still have quite a bit of snow on them making the views even more gorgeous than usual!!! We will be above treeline most of this hike. Please make sure to read the Leader's Notes below.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.7 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,775 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 13,127 ft
  • Pace: Casual Up, Moderate Down

This hike is for RMOTHG Members Only.    We will avoid coming down the snowfield that is on the Mount Flora Trail.  It's not bad hiking up it, but I don't want to hike down it!!!  This will add 0.5miles and +230' of elevation gain on the way back down.  I like hiking down this way in general as it just adds to the views and different types of wildflowers.  I am watching the weather and right now there is a slight chance of thunderstorms predicted.  However, if the weather prediction changes, we will not be summiting and I will shorten the trip by a couple of miles.  Even if the hike is shortened, it is still a beautiful hike with very expansive views and you can see pretty much what we'll be seeing at the summit along the way.  We will avoid I70 traffic on the way up with our early start and, although I cannot guarantee anything, last Tuesday when we were heading back to Wooly Mammoth, we only had a slight 3 minute delay right before Empire.
