Waterton Canyon is a graded road with minimal elevation following the beautiful partially frozen South Platte River.  There are occasional work vehicles and bicycles, but it is usually very peaceful.  Since it is a narrow canyon, it is often in the shade and cool. I usually see deer and sometimes big horn sheep.

We will walk up 3 miles to a picnic spot for lunch then turn around. There are vault toliets along the way, but no drinking water.

Although this is listed as an Octogenarian hike, anyone wishing an easy walk is welcome.

Please contact Cheryl Harmel at cherylharmel5@yahoo.com or 720-272-9553 with questions/concerns.

Meet at Waterton Canyon trailhead ready to hike at 9:30.  This is also the start of the Colorado Trail.

  • Follow Wadsworth Boulevard (Highway 121) south of C-470 past Chatfield Reservoir.
  • Turn left on Waterton Road.
  • Take second entrance to the parking lot on the left.
  • Meet across Waterton Road to the west at the trailhead.
  • Restroom near parking lot and in the canyon.
  • No drinking water available.
