This field day covers the basics of navigation. We will meet at the CMC Building at 7 AM and will leave at 7:05 AM. We usually go to West Trailhead of White Ranch for this field day.
You will need a compass for this Field Day that has declination adjustment. We recommend the Suunto MC-2 compass. Please do not purchase the UTM version and you do not need the global version (costs about twice as much). The least expensive place I have found is the CMC website, but you are free to purchase wherever you please. Also bring paper, ruler, and pencil. Something to write on can be helpful.
We will be going off trail so plan accordingly. Please consult your favorite weather app and bring layers as is appropriate.
You will need the ten essentials, including plenty of water and some lunch.
I often am asked about when we will finish this field day. As a rule, we are back by 3 PM. Please remember though this is not a set time, and we can go short or long depending on questions asked and the conditions of the participants. So, no promises.
Call if you have questions.

Carpooling Etiquette
PS – if we carpool there is a protocol for reimbursing the driver based on 40 cent a mile divided by the number of people in a car. So, the total to be paid would be for example = 40 miles x 40 cents equaling $16. If there are four people in the car (including the driver) each person would owe $4.00. The driver usually pays an equal share.
Also, we often stop in Golden for a social part at the end of the hike. This optional and is not part of the official course.
