Leader in Training (LIT) Trip – RMNP - Wild Basin TH - Junco Lake

“Name for a little songbird, Junco Lake lies in a large alpine bowl above Blue Bird Lake (RMNP Wild basin). Junco Lake is surrounded by the striking ramparts on Mount Copeland’s north-eastern face which are impressive from this angle. Cony Pass and Ouzel Peak highlight the scenery surrounding this gorgeous mountain lake.” This will be a Leader in Training ( Manuel Fillon).

  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 14.2 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,150 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 11,600 ft
  • Pace: on trail 2.5mph, off trail slower

We will depart from blue bird lake TH in RMNP Wild Basin. For the first 6.3 miles, to Blue Bird Lake, we will follow the trail. It is sustained uphill hike with some switchback sections and an elevation gain of about 2,500 feet (Pace: 2-2.5 mph).

Above Blue Bird Lake the trip will be more challenging. We will be off trail bushwalking, scrambling (class 3) negotiating bobbly cliffs, crossing snow field and stream. Going down we will probably follow the Junco Lake drainage (boulder field). Before reconnecting to Blue Bird Lake, the stream is so shallow and wide that it flows through a cobble field, very scenic.

We will be hiking along streams and there will be opportunities to filter and refill water bottles. We will take a combination of short breaks along the trail and a longer break either At Blue Bird or Junco Lake.
