This hike is approximately 7.25 miles with 1400 feet elevation gain. It is an out and back hike starting at the South Platte River and approaching Raleigh Peak without attempting to summit it, however we’ll have great views of Raleigh peak. The high point of the hike is approximately 7300 ft. The hike begins with a 1-mile, 400 foot uphill section. It is a constant climb but not overly steep. We'll have interesting views of the area once we reach the ridgeline.
The gps file for the hike is: https://caltopo.com/m/DEDA6
Our pace will be moderate at 1.75 miles per hour plus or minus to adjust for individual paces.
The weather is predicted to be very nice so this might be the final time this season to enjoy our beautiful Fall weather.
We will meet at the Fort Restaurant south of Morrison on Co. Rd 8 at 7:00 AM on Friday November 7th for a no-later-than 7:15 AM departure. Be sure to park south of the entrance to the restaurant.
A map of the meetup area at the Fort, also showing the driving route to the trailhead, can be found at this link --> Fort to Trailhead
The driving distance to the trailhead is 28 miles one way -- 56 miles total driving distance. Driver reimbursement is 56 miles @ $0.30 per mile = $16.80 per carload to be divided equally among all participants in the car, including the driver.
There is a vault toilet at the trailhead and the driving time is estimated to be only 45 minutes so there will NOT be a stop along the way.
Required Equipment
There will be no snow along the trail so there is no need to bring microspikes.
I recommend bringing trekking poles, layers for a cool start but warming nicely, plenty of water, sunscreen, adequate food and water, a rain jacket (even though no rain is predicted).
Below is the standard language RMOTHG requires trip leaders to include in their trip description.
