BPX 3-DAY: Lake Evelyn from Lake Evelyn TH (Byers Peak Wilderness)
From the Lake Evelyn Trailhead in the Byers Peak Wilderness, this easy to moderate backpack climbs 1,217 feet over 2.1 miles. The trail starts on an old logging road and becomes a single track trail after 1.5 miles, becoming steeper closer to the lake. For 3-day trips, day 2 is an optional 7 mile, 2369' hike to Horseshoe Lake. Return the following day.
Suggested Backpacking Section (BPX) itinerary for 3-day trip to be used for CMC trips led by BPX leaders for BPX members.
Day 1: Starting at the Lake Evelyn TH, hike 2.1 miles up the Lake Evelyn Trail (#15) to Lake Evelyn and set up camp. (2.1 miles, +1,217 / -92 ft.)
Day 2: Optional day hike to Horseshoe Lake. Leave the camping gear at Lake Evelyn and continue up the Lake Evelyn Trail (#15), which becomes steep and rocky as you approach a pass. On the other side of the pass, continue down the Kinney Creek Trail (#22) 1.2 miles to the intersection of the Horseshoe Lake Trail (#23). Follow that trail to Horseshoe Lake. After enjoying a rest at the lake, return to camp at Lake Evelyn. (6.7 miles round trip, +-2,262 ft.)
Day 3: Pack up, break camp and return to the Lake Evelyn TH. (2.1 miles, +92 ft, -1,217 ft.)
Overall Route: 4.25 miles, +-1,308 ft.

Driving directions: From .5 mile east of Parshall on Highway 40, go south on Grand County Road 3 (Ute Pass Road) to GCR 32 (FSR 139) and turn east following this road for 5 miles to FSR 136. Go right on FSR 136 and travel 2.5 miles to the Bottle Pass/Lake Evelyn Trailhead.
From CO Highway 9, 24 miles south of Kremmling, turn onto Summit County Road 15 (Ute Pass Road), which will become Grand County Road 3. Follow this road until you come to GCR 32 (FSR 139) and turn east following this road for 5 miles to FSR 136. Go right on FSR 136 and travel 2.5 miles to the Bottle Pass/Lake Evelyn Trailhead.
