DeCaLiBron Loop

This is a 7.5 miles, 3700 vertical feet hike that summits Democrat, Lincoln, Cameron, and Bross. Also known as the DeCaLiBron Loop.

The DeCaLiBron hike, located near Alma, Colorado, is renowned for offering hikers the opportunity to summit three to four 14ers (mountains over 14,000 feet) in one loop, depending on current access restrictions. Here's a brief overview:

Peaks Involved: The loop includes Mount Democrat, Mount Cameron, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Bross. However, due to landowner issues, access to the Mount Bross summit has been restricted by a private landowner, meaning hikers typically summit three peaks and skirt the Bross summit via a bypass trail.

Trailhead: The hike begins at the Kite Lake TH, which itself sits at a high altitude of around 12,000 feet, reducing the total elevation gain for the peaks.

Distance and Elevation: The loop is approximately 7.6 miles long. The highest point reached is Mount Lincoln at 14,286', with an elevation gain of about 3,000' from the trailhead. Rated Class 2, meaning some scrambling.

Hike Details:

Mount Democrat: After a short trek from Kite Lake, the trail ascends towards a saddle and then to the summit of Mount Democrat.

Mount Cameron: From Democrat, you head towards Cameron, which is not officially considered a 14'er due to its proximity and elevation difference from Lincoln.

Mount Lincoln: This involves descending from Cameron and then climbing to Lincoln, the highest point of the hike.

Mount Bross: If accessible, the trail continues towards Bross, but recent restrictions might lead hikers to bypass its summit.

Difficulty and Time:  Classified as a Class 2 hike, it's considered moderate to strenuous due to the altitude and the cumulative elevation gain. The typical duration for the hike ranges from 6 to 8 hours.

Access and Parking: The trailhead requires a parking fee, and while most vehicles can make it close to the trailhead, having a vehicle with good clearance is beneficial due to the rough road conditions. Always check the Pike-San Isabel National Forests Alerts page or the 14ers.com Kite Lake Trailhead Status page.
