The route was snow-free by the time of our trip, but had snow at the high points according to other trip reports in late May.
The route along Rolling Creek trail, from about Mile 3 to the top of the pass as you hike south, is pretty challenging. We crossed the creek numerous times on unstable DIY log bridges, climbed steep grades, and the terrain is very rocky in sections. Once you get out of the canyon and off the creek, the trail becomes switchbacked through the woods and the trail is easy to lose, as it's low-trafficked, strewn with deadfall, and people have made social trails all over avoiding downed trees. Once you finish Rolling Creek trail, the rest of the loop is pretty mellow and the trail is good, but the mileage on this loop is long for a short trip.
Recommended change to Route + Place: This should be a Difficult rating. If you make it a longer trip and do less per day, it may change the rating.
This is a good trip for a lightweight pack.
Our itinerary:
1. Meet at park n ride at 4 pm.
2. Carpool to Rolling Creek TH. Stated hiking around 6 pm.
3. Reached campsite ~2 miles into Rolling Creek TH at 7 pm. There is a nice group site at the 2 mile mark, on the east side of the trail at the foot of a rocky outcropping that shows as a peak/high point on maps with good detail. The stream about 1/4 mile north of the site was running.
4. We had good weather, ate dinner, went to bed.
5. Departed camp at 8:30 and began the hardest part of the hike--the route south on Rolling Creek, through the choked canyon and then up to the summit of the unnamed pass. Rolling Creek Trail presents some challenges, esp with full packs--multiple creek crossings on unstable DIY log bridges; steep grades, rocky terrain, and a trail that's easy to lose close to the summit. We reached the bottom of the pass on the other side around 12:45 pm, so the first ~5 miles of our day took over 4 hours. We ate lunch at the campsite where Wigwam and Rolling Creek trails intersect. There is water there to resupply.
6. Continued our hike west on Wigwam to Lost Park Campground, then north on Brookside-McCurdy to North Fork. This was a long, hard day, with 14.4 miles and almost 3800 feet of gain. We reached camp around 6:15 pm. There are ample good sites around North Fork TH, and good creek access. We encountered a bike packer and car campers there, but had plenty of space for our group. We ate dinner and went to bed exhausted but happy!
7. Departed camp at 8:30 and hiked Segment 4 of the Colorado Trail back to Rolling Creek TH. Day 3 was pretty mellow, especially compared to Day 2. We reached the cars around 1:15 pm.
Overall, we had great weather and a good time challenging ourselves and getting to know each other.
Ending stats:
- 24.63 miles
- 4633 feet gain and loss
- 44 hours from TH to TH
