The Vogel Canyon trail head was easy to find. Roads are suitable for all areas. It is a well maintained area with several covered picnic tables and a vault toilet.
We met east of Pueblo at a predesignated spot for carpooling. We had three vehicles, six people and three dogs. It was a pleasant 1.5 hour trip to the Vogel Canyon picnic area. The hike was at a casual pace allowing participants to explore interesting rock formations, search for Native Indian rock art, ruins of the old stagecoach line and of old homesteads. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. In areas where the trail passed over flat rock, across long stretches of prairie, or down hillsides, large cairns have been established by the Forest Service. We had perfect weather for a hike across Colorado's high desert prairie, 45 - 60 degrees, and overcast. We passed through areas wherein the trail was hemmed in by pear cactus. I wore leather boots, and didn't regret it. There are seven springs in the canyon. I think we found them all. At the end of the hike we had a nice lunch in the shade at one of the picnic tables.
