Avalanche Awareness: Learn Before You Go
Contacts
Join the Colorado Mountain Club and Arapahoe Libraries at the Southglenn Library for an introduction to avalanche awareness and winter backcountry safety. This accessible session is a great place to start if you’re new to avalanche education or want to build a stronger foundation before heading into the winter backcountry.
We’ll watch AIARE’s short Know Before You Go video and then put that information into practice with a go/no-go activity. Working through different winter scenarios, you’ll consider conditions, terrain, and other factors that can help you decide whether a planned outing is a good idea or when it’s time to turn around. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about avalanche safety from the Colorado Mountain Club.
This session is an awareness-level introduction and is not a replacement for formal avalanche training. If you’re interested in continuing your avalanche education, CMC offers additional opportunities throughout the season, including our free online Avalanche Aware course and more in-depth avalanche education for those looking to develop their skills further. Check out our course catalog to learn more!
