The Power of Giving Back: Where Leadership meets Stewardship
with Courtenay Schurman of the Mountaineers
Leadership in the outdoors is about more than reaching a summit—it’s about creating experiences that are safe, fun, and successful for everyone in the group. When we bring stewardship into leadership, we extend that same spirit of care to the trails, lands, and communities that make our adventures possible. In this session, we’ll explore how small choices by each leader can inspire a culture of giving back that strengthens both our community and the wild places we love.
Courtenay wrote the conditioning chapter for Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills (6th–10th editions), co-authored The Outdoor Athlete, and contributed to Mountaineers magazine’s Peak Performance column for nearly a decade. Her blog explores change, loss, and growth through outdoor experiences.
An active volunteer leader, Courtenay leads Conditioning Hiking Series outings, “Tuesdays with Court” hikes, birding trips, and Care and Share grief support walks. She also teaches online and in-person conditioning seminars and outdoor leadership workshops. Across her coaching, writing, and volunteer work, she helps people connect with nature, support one another, and discover what they’re capable of.
