AIARE L1 - Field Day 2 – Berthoud Pass

Expect an eight hour day in the snow. This is your Team's day to lead a tour using the AIARE Decision Making Framework.

Get Ready To Lead! You will gather with your team the night before to plan a tour and route that will give you the best opportunity to put into practice all the items you learned and were exposed to the first two days.

You will work as a team in putting together your trip ideas and funneling it into plan that includes the day's route, start/end times, activities, and objectives/outcomes. You will use your AIARE Field Book to record your team names, emergency contacts, the weather and avalanche forecasts, your route - which will be influenced by the day’s weather and avalanche forecasts, Your emergency equipment and protocols and your debrief at the end of the day.

Throughout the day, you, along with your teammates, shall have an opportunity to lead the team. You'll end an awesome day with a team debrief. Your AIARE Instructor's role will be to coach, answer questions, keep you safe and on task. Extra points for submitting a useful observation to CAIC.

Be Fit to handle another eight hour physical day in the Colorado winter weather.  Review the gear requirements list and make sure you have all your bases covered.

The AIARE Course Leader will send out the full agenda for the class, including start times and meet-up locations a week or so prior to class.

Clothing:  Bundle up folks. Field days will commence even during very cold and snowy weather. In Colorado, that means layers and back-ups. Hand and toe warmers. Extra gloves. Make sure your boots fit!!

Helmet for skiers and splitboarders

Ski goggles and sunglasses.

Eligible Mode of Travel: AT Skis, Tele skis, split boards, snowshoes.

Food, Drink for the day, consider hot drink, water, energy snacks, sandwiches, soup.

Sunblock, personal med kit, your normal repair kit suitable for your gear

Required Avalanche Gear:  - The Club has Transceiver/Probe/Shovel kits available for loan to those students who do not possess these items.  If you do not presently own the gear, you may hold off on purchasing it, especially if you have not made any decisions about the extent of your backcountry winter forays, whichever winter discipline you are contemplating pursuing.
