TCS Intermediate Rock - Modular Track

Intermediate Rock Climbing follows our Basic Climbing course. Intermediate Rock focuses on outdoor climbing skills, rappelling, and safety. It may be taken as a stand-alone class, or as part of the Alpine Climbing School "Modular" track.

Schedule:
Field Days are all day starting early at Maxwell Falls.

Completion of online learning is required before field day.

The prerequisite for this class is Basic Climbing, or Basic Climbing Equivalency
Waiver. Please do not sign up if you have not taken the pre-reqs.

Learning Outcomes:
Multiple methods of rappel
Rappel back-ups and safety
Intermediate climbing movement and technique
Lots of practice climbing & rappelling outside, on real rock!
Climbing knots: barrel knot, fisherman's knot, water knot, autoblock hitch, Munter hitch, figure 8 on a bight, double-overhand on a bight (aka BHK)
Review rope coiling: butterfly coil and backpackers' coil.

Class will be held at a local outdoor climbing area. The approach hike will take
approx 30 minutes. Please bring the footwear, clothing, food/water, appropriate for the conditions.

Next steps:
Go climbing! Practice your new skills at climbing wall nights and trips to the local
cliffs.

Continue learning. This class is a prerequisite for many other climbing classes at
the CMC. It's also a required class for the CMC's Alpine Climbing School "Modular
Track"

Required Equipment

Required Climbing Equipment:

  • climbing harness
  • mountaineering boots (If ACS Students) and rock climbing shoes
  • climbing helmet
  • ATC belay device
  • auto block
  • 3 locking carabiners
  • 2 safety leashes (e.g. 48" sewn nylon sling)
  • belay gloves (optional). Gloves made especially for belaying are great, but an inexpensive pair of leather work gloves from the hardware store are fine too.
  • The 10 Essentials
  • CMC can provide most equipment but you are encouraged to bring your own. CMC does not provide mountaineering boots or belay gloves.
