TCS Sport Climbing - Gym to Crag - CMC State

The Sport Climbing Gym-to-Crag Course will cover how to safely lead and follow rock climbs that have been protected by bolts.

The Gym to Crag Lead Climbing class will teach participants the skills needed to safely lead bolted single-pitch climbs outside.  During the class lecture and field day, participants will learn and practice the following skills:

  • How to properly clip bolts and avoid common errors, including Back-Clipping and Z-Clipping
  • How to safely lead belay 
  • How to set up an anchor
  • How to clean sport anchors and lower safely (including rappel)
  • Safety and risk management

Participants are expected to either be graduates of ACS or Intermediate Rock Climbing or have experience with good climbing belay skills, rappelling, good climbing communications, and a good working knowledge of knots and the climber's safety system.  Participants should already have some experience lead climbing in the gym or outside.

Gear required: Helmet, harness, climbing shoes, belay device with locker, autoblock with locker, safety leash with locker, single or double length runner with locker. Optional gear: chalk bag, extra locking carabiner, extra non-locking carabiner.
