Ten Essentials:
1. Emergency communication: Cell phone, whistle, personal locator beacon, and/or satellite communication device
2. Navigation tools: Map, compass, and trusted GPS
3. Emergency shelter: Bivy bag, tarp
4. Sun protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, breathable UV protective clothing
5. Insulating layers: Warm clothing, rain gear, insulating ground pad
6. Illumination: Headlamp and extra batteries
7. Fire starter: Waterproof matches, flint, and lighter
8. First Aid Kit: Always pack to your level of knowledge and ability
9. Multi-tool / knife: Repair kit, duct tape
10. Nutrition / hydration: Extra food, water, water filtration device, knowledge of water sources on trip
