Student Skills Field Day (Snow/Rock) – St Mary's Glacier

This is the only skills related Field Days for students enrolled in Alpine Scrambling Course Denver. All student must successfully complete Student Skills Field Day to participate in Level 1 and Level 2 progressive Scramble Field Days. As we cannot control the weather, we have set up one Back Up/Weather Date in case of the need to cancel due to weather. All students must be available for all course scheduled field days including the Back-Up/Weather Day. In the case of the need to cancel, this Student Skills Field Day will beheld the following scheduled field day.

  • Meet Up Time: Alpine Start: 6:00am (BE EARLY and Ready to Drive Away at 6am)

    Meet Up Place: Wooly Mammoth Park-N-Ride: 18560 US-40, Golden, CO 80401 (Section BB)

    • Carpool/Parking Contribution: 
      • $33 (83 miles RT/divided equally among students: BRING CASH/EXACT CHANGE)
      • NOTE: DEN ASC honors our all volunteer leaders by not including them in the carpool/Parking Fee contribution
      • NOTE: There is a $20/vehicle PARKING FEE for St. Mary’s Glacier

    Alternate Date: 6/15/24

    • As we cannot control the weather, we are setting up an alternate date for all field days in case of need of cancelation.  All students must be available for ALL days, including the Back-Up Weather Day.

Student Skills Field Day will focus on: 

1. Snow Travel/Self-Arrest with Ice Axe

2. Navigation

3. Scrambling Techniques: Hand/Foot Placements, Mantle, Layback, Stemming

4. Rock Travel: Talus/Scree

5. Protection/Gear: Chest Harness, Personal Anchor, Prussic Hitch, Belay (DEMO)

6. Spend the Night: BIVVY/Shelter
