TCS Intermediate Rock Climbing w Basic Anchors - 2024

Climbing Course

TCS Intermediate Rock Climbing w Basic Anchors

Building off of Basic Climbing, Intermediate Rock focuses on climbing safety: equipment (and using it properly), communication, belaying, lowering, and rappelling. New this year, Basic Anchors has been added to our Intermediate Rock Class. It covers how to evaluate natural features (trees, boulders, rock horns, etc) and fixed protection (bolts). You will learn how to build anchors suitable for top-roping and rappelling. They both may be taken as one stand-alone class, or as part of the Alpine Climbing School "Modular" track.

Schedule:

This is a two-day class. Field Days are all day starting early at Castlewood Canyon State Park. The approach to the crag is about 1/2 mile. Please bring the footwear, clothing, food/water, appropriate for the conditions.

Completion of online learning is required before field day.

The prerequisite for this class is Basic Climbing, or Basic Climbing Equivalency
Waiver. Please do not sign up if you have not enrolled in or taken the pre-reqs.

Learning Outcomes:

The goal of Intermediate Rock is to teach students multiple methods of rappelling including the extended, off the harness, single strand and the munter hitch rapels. Additional skills include rappel back-ups and safety climbing movement and technique. You will get lots of experience practicing outside, on real rock!

This class includes learning the following climbing knots: barrel knot, fisherman's knot, water knot, autoblock hitch, munter hitch, klemheist hitch, figure 8 on a bight, double-overhand on a bight (aka BHK) and review of rope coiling: butterfly coil and backpackers' coil.

The goal of the Basic Anchors Class is to teach students safe methods for constructing top-rope anchors. Armed with these skills the student will be able to construct anchors from natural features and fixed gear, as suggested by the location. These anchors will be suitable for rappelling and top-rope climbing. We will also briefly touch on how these principles can be applied to snow anchors. We stress that the seminar is geared toward top-rope anchors. The seminar does not teach the student how to lead climb.

Next steps:
Go climbing! Practice your new skills at climbing wall nights and trips to the local
cliffs.

Continue learning. This class is a prerequisite for many other climbing classes at
the CMC. It's also a required class for the CMC's Alpine Climbing School "Modular" Track
