  • Northern Colorado
  • Mountaineering
  • Adults
  • Moderate

All evening classes will take place at the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce, 225 S Meldrum St, Fort Collins.  Classes will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. and end around 9:00 p.m. – unless otherwise indicated.

  • An introduction to mountain health will be covered. The range of topics will encompass basic techniques used to treat minor abrasions obtained in the mountain environment, to what can happen at higher altitudes and emergency treatments for such conditions (including AMS, HAPE, and HACE).
  • Students will also be introduced to descriptions of high altitude environments including terrain and any special equipment, food, and clothing required. The HAMS (High Altitude Mountaineering School) taught in Denver and Colorado Springs will also be described in this portion of the lecture.
  • Students will create high peak overnight plans (who’s bringing what, where to meet, food preparation, etc.) All plans need to be approved by the appropriate Senior Instructor prior to the high peak climb in June.
  • Instructors need to schedule with all members of their group the high peak route finding and overnight climbs. The high peak route finding climb will make use of map and compass techniques as well as general, technical, and common sense topographical knowledge to find optimal routes up the chosen mountain.  The high peak overnight climb will teach students to plan and implement all aspects of an overnight high peak climbing trip in Colorado, ranging from camp site selection,  gear organization, the actual climb, to getting back to the car safely.
