Basic Self-Rescue Field Day – Castlewood Canyon State Park
We will discuss, demo and practice basic self-rescue skills at an outdoor rock-climbing crag.

We will introduce general self-rescue concepts and then learn some basic self-rescue skills such as rope ascension, getting hands-free while belaying, taking over a belay, passing a knot on rappel, alternate rappel methods, and how to use a rope coil to help evacuate an injured climber. Students will get to practice all these skills on the rock under instructor supervision.
We will meet at 8 am at the trailhead for the Grocery Store Wall in Castlewood Canyon. Enter the Park through the West entrance on Castlewood Canyon Road. Park at the small lot on the right with the single picnic table, just prior to the large lot on the left. Here's the spot on the map-

Required Equipment
**All the gear listed below is required for each student**
- Basic climbing kit- harness, helmet, shoes- including approach/hiking and climbing
- Belay and rappel device- whichever type(s) you own and use, basic tube-style or assisted braking ok
- Personal tether- 120 cm sewn nylon sling or PAS or equivalent
- One additional double length (120 cm) sewn nylon sling/runner
- Non-locking carabiners- at least 4
- Locking carabiners- at least 6 total with at least 3 large HMS/Pear-shaped
- Rappel back-up loop- 10-14 inch tied loop of 5-6 mm nylon cord (made from a 4-ft. length of cord), or small Hollow-block loop
- Foot and waist prusik loops if owned; otherwise an additional small loop of cord similar to your rappel back-up loop
